An American oil Baron (Burt Lancaster) sends a man (Peter Riegert )to Scotland to buy up an entire fishing village to build an oil refinery. But things don’t go as expected. Much to the American’s surprise, the entire town is happy to sell itself for big money assisted by local innkeeper, Gordon Urquhart (Denis Lawson) – who is also the town’s accountant and mayor. But negotiations fall apart when an old man who lives in a shack on the beach refuses to sell. As negotiations stall, the Americans are seduced by the charm of the Scottish village.
